About the 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor

The 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor is the recording studio of producer/engineer Mike West. Mike produces songwriters, string bands, jazz musicians, pop groups and punk rockers from around the world. He is known for a warm sound and a relaxed approach that favors musicians over machines.

The Pickin’ Parlor began as a studio in a shot-gun house in the notorious Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans. There, Mike produced so many albums for local artists, newspapers dubbed him “The Allen Toussaint of the Lower 9th”.

After hurricane Katrina washed away the recording studio and most of the neighborhood, Mike relocated to Lawrence, Kansas. Now in a barn-style cottage, the 9th Ward Pickin’ Parlor continues to produce great recordings for established and developing artists.
